Frequently asked questions.

Getting started.

01What is RACE15 Studio?

RACE15 Studio is a tuning environment for supported Bosch EDC15 ECUs. It combines a Windows application with RACE15 firmware installed on your existing ECU, bringing calibration, live data and ECU programming together.

The supplied firmware gives compatible ECUs a common starting point. You can work with familiar RACE15 maps across supported ECU versions, even when their original factory software differs. Tune Setup helps you adjust supported settings for the vehicle and its hardware.

From Studio, you can:

  • Edit calibration maps in table, 2D and 3D views.
  • Record and replay ECU data, including additional internal signals provided by RACE15 firmware.
  • Follow the engine's estimated operating position on supported maps.
  • Save and compare tune versions, then program supported changes over CAN.

The first installation uses K-line. Once RACE15 is installed, its CAN features connect the ECU and Studio for the tuning workflow.

02Do I need another ECU or separate firmware?

No. RACE15 works with your existing ECU if its hardware is supported. The firmware for your selected ECU family is included with the corresponding Full licence.

You'll also need a compatible J2534 interface and the correct connections to communicate with the ECU.

03Which ECUs are supported?

RACE15 currently supports these ECU groups:

ECU familyEngineVAG part-number group
EDC15VM+1.9 TDI four-cylinder VP038906012
EDC15VM+2.5 TDI five-cylinder VP074906018
EDC15P+1.9 TDI four-cylinder PD038906019

Check the compatibility information and Studio's catalog using the complete VAG part number and Bosch hardware number on your ECU.

04My ECU is 038906019KJ, but Studio shows 038906019. Is that correct?

Yes. Studio groups its supplied firmware under the shorter 038906019 number. The compatibility list shows the complete ECU numbers and Bosch hardware IDs.

For example, 038906019KJ is listed with Bosch hardware number 0281011216. Check both numbers to confirm your ECU is supported.

05How can the same RACE15 starting point work with different ECU versions?

Different factory ECU versions can have different original software and map layouts. RACE15 replaces that software with a supplied RACE15 image for the supported ECU group.

For example, 038906019KJ and 038906019FK are different factory ECU versions, but both belong to the supported 038906019 group. With the RACE15 image for that group, you can work with the same familiar set of RACE15 maps.

Check that your exact ECU hardware is supported and choose settings appropriate for the vehicle.

06How do I configure RACE15 for my engine?

Tune Setup provides options for supported ECU software and hardware combinations. Depending on the ECU, these can include injector settings, MAP sensor scaling, smoke-limiter input and glow-system options.

Studio shows the proposed changes before you apply them. You select the settings for the parts fitted to the vehicle; Studio does not detect those parts automatically.

07How do I install RACE15 for the first time?

Check compatibility and keep a backup of the existing ECU software. Start with the supplied image for your ECU. You can review and apply the Tune Setup presets that match the vehicle before the first write; this is recommended so you can check the configuration once the ECU is running. Save the tune before writing it.

Use K-line Write with the ECU operating normally in the vehicle; boot mode is not required. After installation, confirm that Studio recognizes RACE15 before using its CAN features.

Studio does not automatically check that the selected K-line write file matches the ECU's complete part number, so confirm the image before writing.

08What happens to my existing tune?

Installing RACE15 replaces the ECU's existing software and calibration. Your current tune is not automatically transferred into the new RACE15 tune.

Keep backups of the original software and any custom tune you want to preserve. You can use your existing tune as a reference when building a RACE15 calibration.

CAN & tuning.

09My ECU already has CAN. Why does it need RACE15 firmware?

Your ECU may already use CAN to communicate with the vehicle. RACE15 firmware adds the specific communication needed for Studio's direct ECU data and CAN Flash features. Those features also need the correct connection to the ECU's powertrain CAN bus.

10What does CAN add to the tuning workflow?

After RACE15 is installed, Studio can receive additional ECU data and program supported changes over CAN. You can record a session, review it alongside the maps, make changes and flash the next revision in the same application.

11I already use WinOLS, VCDS and a flashing tool. What does RACE15 add?

RACE15 brings supported map editing, ECU logging, map tracing and programming into one workspace. You can use it for those parts of your EDC15 workflow while continuing to use other specialist tools where needed.

12What can I log with RACE15?

RACE15 can access additional internal ECU signals through its firmware. Available signals depend on the ECU and the active data configuration.

Studio offers recording rates up to 50 Hz and lets you replay recordings later. The recording rate does not guarantee that every signal updates at 50 Hz.

13Can I see which part of a map the engine is using?

On supported maps, Studio can display an estimated operating point as the engine runs. You can also follow it while replaying a recording.

This helps you find the region of a map relevant to a test. Not every map supports tracing, and the marker is an estimate rather than proof of the exact cell used by the ECU.

14Does RACE15 automatically make a Stage 1 tune?

No. The Stage 1 group organizes commonly used maps; you still make the tuning decisions.

Studio also includes Tune Review and N75 Auto Tuner. Tune Review highlights relationships to inspect, while N75 Auto Tuner proposes boost-control changes that you can choose to apply to your tune.

15Can I edit, compare and save calibrations?

Yes. You can edit maps, compare values, save local projects, create checkpoints and export supported BIN files. Exporting saves a file on your PC; it does not program the ECU.

Studio can correct certain early checksums when opening a supported BIN, but you should not assume that it automatically corrects every firmware checksum on export.

16Can I flash changes directly from Studio?

Yes. Once RACE15 is installed, you can save your tune and use CAN Flash to program supported changes from Studio.

An optional Auto Flash feature can also queue programming after you save. It must be enabled deliberately, and programming can reset the ECU.

Hardware & wiring.

17What hardware and wiring do I need?

You need a physical Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, a compatible J2534 interface and the correct connections for your ECU. Virtual machines are not supported. Interfaces reported as tested include Tactrix Openport 2.0, Mongoose JLR and Scanmatik SM2 Pro; contact support for details of the operations tested with your adapter.

CAN live data and CAN Flash need a direct connection from the OBD-II socket to the ECU's powertrain CAN bus. Cut the socket's existing CAN high and CAN low wires and splice the socket side to the corresponding high and low wires on the powertrain CAN bus connected to the ECU.

Vehicles can have several CAN buses. Use the vehicle's wiring diagram to identify the pair connected to the ECU; convenience and infotainment CAN are different networks. Disconnecting the original OBD CAN connection may affect other diagnostic access.

Recovery & support.

18Can I restore my ECU to its original software?

Yes. The current restoration method uses boot mode and requires the correct procedure and equipment for your ECU. Keep a backup of the original software before installing RACE15.

Restoration through normal K-line is planned, but it is not working correctly today and no fix date has been confirmed. Contact support if you need help with restoration.

19What happens if flashing is interrupted?

Studio can continue some interrupted CAN writes using the supported V24 loader. This applies to certain writes in sectors B2–B10; other failures may require a different recovery procedure, including boot mode.

Follow Studio's instructions and contact support if you are unsure how to proceed.

20What if RACE15 does not work correctly with my ECU?

Contact product support with the ECU's complete VAG and Bosch numbers, your adapter details and a description of the problem. Logs can also help us investigate.

We will examine the setup and make reasonable efforts to help. A solution cannot be guaranteed for every ECU or configuration.

Preview & licensing.

21Can I try RACE15 before buying?

Yes. The free Preview includes example maps and recorded engine data, so you can explore the editor, plots and map tracing without an ECU.

Demo edits are temporary and cannot be saved, exported or sent to an ECU. Preview also includes separate K-line and boot-mode tools that can work with selected BIN files when compatible hardware is connected.

22How does the Full licence work?

Full is a one-time purchase for one physical Windows PC. You can choose a licence for one ECU family or both supported families, and software updates are included.

The licence needs periodic online validation and supports up to 30 days of offline use. See the pricing page for current prices and availability.

23Can customer feedback lead to improvements?

Yes. We work with customers to investigate compatibility problems and unusual ECU configurations. When feasible, what we learn can lead to improvements in the shared firmware or calibration library.
